Challenges

This project runs two open innovation challenges, each mentored by industry coaches, who support the participants in detailing their ideas. The challenges run in FRANCIS follow three rounds.  The process of the rounds in the challenges differ to some extent.

In the first challenge, the three rounds were run consecutively. A limited number of teams were invited to proceed from one round to the next.

In the second challenge, rounds one and two are run in parallel; teams that have passed a pre-check can proceed to round two. At the end of round two, five teams will proceed to the final round.

Both challenges are mentored by industry and research experts; and both challenges offer grants to successful teams for the efforts they invest in the challenges.

Target Countries, Target Groups, and Challenge Process

    BSH FRANCIS Challenge 1

The scope of the first challenge was kitchen and household. Target market countries were Turkey, Germany, and India. Focused target groups were troubled families, minimalistic living people and elderly people living alone.

The topic of the second challenge is hotel, travel and outdoor experiences. Target countries are India, Germany and Colombia. Focused target groups are hotel pioneers as well as eco-conscious travellers, travel visionaries and outdoor enthusiasts.

Lessons learned from the challenges will be incorporated into the citizen frugal innovation framework at the end of the project, so that they can serve as a guide for future frugal innovation initiatives.
